SYSTEM OVERVIEW

Designed to keep you mission capable from -40°F and above, the Axios clothing system can be worn in a variety of ways and customized to the users needs and dynamic environmental conditions. Layers can be added, or removed within the system to accommodate the temperature range you're operating in as well as Active and Static use profiles.

LAYERING CONSIDERATIONS

TEMPERATURE REGULATION

Determining a base temperature range for your environment is the first step in building your layering system. If you’re unfamiliar with your environment, spend some time researching recent and historic seasonal weather patterns. Some environments are rather consistent, while others can be susceptible to dramatic shifts in weather and temperature. Serious factors that should be considered when determining a temperature range are temperature swings throughout the day, elevation gain, wind chill factor, and moisture in the air. The four temperature ranges that we’ve based the Axios Layering System on are as follows: -40° - 0° F / 0° - 32°F / 32° - 45°F / Above 45° F.

ACTIVITY LEVEL

On most excursions you will likely experience periods of high energy output (hiking, climbing, etc.), as well as periods of relative inactivity (eating, sleeping, etc.). We generate a tremendous amount of energy and heat when we’re active. Our body naturally perspires to cool and regulate body temperature as we expel heat. When building your layering system, it’s important to choose layers that will keep you cool when you’re active (to avoid overheating) and warm and dry when you’re static (to avoid freezing).

  • ACTIVE [A1-A5] : Active sub-system layers are optimized for moisture transport, rapid evaporation, and breathability during high energy output.
  • STATIC [A3-A7] : Static sub-system layers are designed to trap body heat and protect against external moisture in extreme cold environments where energy output is low.

MOISTURE MANAGEMENT

There are two factors to consider when talking about moisture management; Environmental moisture (i.e.: Snow, Rain, Mud, etc) and perspiration caused by an increase in body temperature. In order to stay dry, we have to manage both types of moisture. The best way to do this is to start from the inside and move out. You’re next to skin base layer is going to be the foundation for your system. These highly breathable next to skin garments are designed to rapidly pull moisture from the surface of the body and transport it into the next layer in your system. Your mid layer is your insulation layer and its main function is to continue moisture transport and insulate body heat. Finally you must choose an outer layer, or a shell. The material of your outer layer is dependent on the amount of environmental moisture that you plan to encounter as well as the temperature range of your environment. That said, the function of your outer layer is to expel perspiration back into the environment and protect against environmental moisture coming in.

Layer Overview

A1-A2 Baselayers

Our Aether and Krios Baselayers are the foundation of your layering system. Built out of 4-way stretch synthetic materials with anti-microbial gussets and underarms, these garments are designed to move moisture efficiently from the body and keep you cool during high energy output. Shop Baselayers.

A3 Insulation Layers

Our mid weight performance layers can be worn as insulation layers, or stand along outer garments depending on the environment. These lightweight loft and fleece layers are breathable and highly wind resistant. Shop Insulation Layers.

A4 Wind Protection

The A4 Wind Shirt and Pant are designed for lightweight wind protection. Built out of a DWR treated nylon ripstop with 4-way stretch arm and crotch gussets, these garments are extremely packable and offer excellent protection against light rain and snow. Shop Wind Layers.

A5 Softshells

A5 Softshell layers are designed to protect you against wind and rain during active use. These outer layers are built out of an extremely breathable and 4-way stretch material that allows for excellent mobility and protection from the elements. Shop Softshells.

A6 Rain Protection

A6 Rain layers offer complete wind and water protection in static environments. These garments have fully taped waterproof seams and are built out of wind and waterproof 3 layer Goretex. Our A6 layers are also extremely packable and abrasion resistant. Shop Rain Protection.

A7 High Loft

Our A7 layers offer warmth in extreme cold environments. These layers are built with DWR coated nylon ripstop and Climashield® APEX Insulation. The APEX insulation will keep you warm, retain heat when wet and will dry much faster than down. Shop Cold Protection.
