In Temperate/Wet environments, you want to balance breathability and protection from the elements. Our L5 - Softshell layers will provide plenty of protection from light rain and wind while providing optimal breathability.
In a Cold/Wet environment, staying dry is the key to warmth. A waterproof shell will protect you from environmental moisture like rain and snow and highly breathable insulating layers will pull excess perspiration away from your body.
Cold/Dry environments are usually windier. Wind protection and insulation are key considerations. Also ensure you are using layers that wick moisture away from your skin to keep you warm.
Extreme cold environments are usually dry and sunny. Wind resistance and insulation are generally a higher priority than protection from rain. Depending on whether your activity is more static or active, high-loft layers like an L7 may be required.
Here is a break down of all environments and which layers to use in each condition.
ENVIROMENT | L1 | L2 | L3 | L4 | L5 | L6 | L7 | L8 |
HOT: 106° TO 75° | ACTIVE USE | ACTIVE USE
TEMPERATE: 45° TO 75° | ACTIVE USE | STATIC USE
COLD: 32° TO 45° | ACTIVE USE | OPTIONAL | ACTIVE/STATIC USE | ACTIVE USE | ACTIVE/STATIC USE | STATIC USE
COLD-DRY: 0° TO 32° | ACTIVE USE | OPTIONAL | ACTIVE USE | OPTIONAL | ACTIVE USE | STATIC USE
EXTREME COLD: -40° TO 0° | OPTIONAL | ACTIVE USE | ACTIVE USE | OPTIONAL | ACTIVE USE | STATIC USE
POLAR: -70° TO -40° | OPTIONAL | ACTIVE USE | ACTIVE USE | OPTIONAL | ACTIVE USE | ACTIVE/STATIC USE |
Active Use - Refers to when you're on the move (hiking, climbing, skiing, etc).
Static Use - Refers to situations when you are not moving (sitting, resting, eating etc)
Optional/Environment Dependent - Refers to situations where you might be in the temperature range but need more protection from elements such as wind or gusts or if you are more susceptible to the cold.
