I bought this to replace a PCU L7 parka that was too bulky to move in, thinking I’d never get the chance to actually wear it in “cold” weather. Well, thanks to the winter storm here in Texas, I got my chance! The Cetra K7 is outstanding. I wore it on an active ruck march for 5 miles, and generated some sweat, but it whisked the moisture to the outer layer with no issues. I’ve also worn it under static (no movement) conditions in temperatures between -10 and 30 or so, and with little more than a base layer thermal, and a Beyond fleece hoodie, and the only thing on me that got cold was my legs.
I’m damn glad I picked this up when I did; it’s been a real life saver. I'm 6'3", 170 lbs, and bought the Cetra in a large. There is plenty of room for layering, and movement is comfortable and unrestricted.
I was worried because I couldn't try it on, but the jacket I received was very warm. However, the length was a little short, so I will buy a longer length next time.
This jacket feels like it shouldn’t be as warm as it is. It’s super light, thin, and comfortable. Put a wool sweater under it and you will stay warm even in the coldest temps. The Nylon is also somehow much softer and more comfortable than coats this durable usually are, which is awesome. The sizing is true to size except for the arms which are perfect if you have huge arms. If you work out a ton you will probably be in love with the fit. If you are a normal shaped dude the arms are laughably wide. I loved the coat enough that I took it to a tailor and had them adjust the arm size. Now the coat fits perfectly. All the pockets are well sized and the hood is awesome. I have coats from patagonia and arcteryx, and the Beyond hood features the best hood.
This is an excellent winter jacket. Lightweight and warm. Perfect fit. Enough room to layer underneath without being loose fitting. Ample pocket space. Works as a travel pillow when packed into it's stuff sack. Beyond satisfied yet again.
I'm 6'8 with long arms and this jacket in an XL-Long which fits me like a dream. I'm very happy with that aspect, and that is saying something since proper fit for me is a rare thing indeed. I'm all in on the fit.
This jacket is warm, we hit 31 degrees and I didn't even feel it. Admittedly, I was skeptical because I'm inexperienced in wearing Beyond’s cold weather gear. I'm now every impressed, even with no layering I'm at ease on a cold night out and about in this jacket.
I have the K-5 Modus, a stylish jacket with no big flaws and I love wearing it. The K-5 zippers are very well made and work perfectly. On the K-7 Cetra the zippers seem like a negligent afterthought that have never failed, to fail. In wearing a jacket, nothing matters more than being able to put that jacket on and zip it up without a battle. This applies to zipping or unzipping the pockets as well. I must wrestle with caught fabric every time. Having to stop and fix the zipper-caught fabric constantly seems like something that should have been engineered out in the design phase. Fixing this issue on a cold day with heavy gloves isn’t something I look forward to. I suppose I just won’t close them much. This is a big flaw in the K-7 Cetra. Honestly, I almost returned the jacket after my first try-on because the pocket zippers are useless if closing them without a struggle is the goal.
Additionally, all of the zippers on the K-7 are lightweight nylon and plastics and very flimsy. For the price I expected zippers as good as the Modus, or better. The bottom line on any nylon zippered jacket is “when the zipper dies, so does it.” I can’t help thinking they won’t last long but I hope I’m wrong.
The bottom drawstring is fine, it holds so no problems there, but the jacket has no waist area drawstring and that would be a bonus for holding in heat and keeping out wind.
I have no doubts the K-7 Cetra will keep me warm this winter, I just hope those zippers hold up.
